Dr. Ritu Chopra presented a session on “Grow Your Own” Partnerships to Prepare and Retain Special Educators. The presentation shared features of the Center’s grant funded projects that are partnerships between school districts and teacher programs involving paraeducator-to-teacher career ladders. Successes and challenges in recruitment, preparation and retention of project participants was shared.
Dr. Chopra also led another session with Dr. Donna Sobel. The title of the session was: “University and Community College Faculty Partnership for Preparing Special Education Paraprofessionals.” They shared experiences from three collaborative projects funded by the Office of Special Education Programs (OSEP) that prepare paraprofessionals for early intervention/early childhood education and K-12 settings.
Additionally on November 9, Dr. Chopra co-presented a four hour post-conference professional development workshop titled “How to Promote Paraprofessional Supervision in Teacher Preparation Programs” with Dr. Denise Uitto (Ohio) and Dr. Claudia Reinfelds (Kansas). They shared research based supervisory functions, interactive tools, and suggestions for integrating supervision content into existing college coursework. Click for more information.
