- Becoming a Paraprofessional
- To work in a Title I building, the paraprofessional must hold a Level III Educational Assistant license
- To obtain a Level III Licensure
- Be at least 18 years of age; and
- Hold a high school diploma or equivalent
- Provide certification of satisfactory completion of an orientation pertinent to assignment
- Earn an associate's degree (or forty-eight (48) semester hours of academic
credit) that includes non-remedial degree coursework as follows:
- 3 hours of language arts/reading or language arts/reading pedagogy;
- 3 hours of writing or writing pedagory;
- 3 hours of mathematics of mathematics pedagogy;
- 6 hours of reading, writing, and math readiness, or professional education, or classroom management, teaching assistance, or special education; or
- Obtain a passing score of at least 70% on a locally administered test (approved by the Public Education Department of New Mexico)
- A fourth option is available for those hired prior to January 8, 2002.
